Canadiano
DCHP-3 (Feb 2025)
Spelling variants:"Canadiano"
1an. — Food & Drink, Canada-US relations
an espresso shot of coffee diluted with hot water.
Type: 4. Culturally Significant — The term Canadiano refers to a European-style shot of espresso that is diluted with hot water, traditionally known as an "Americano" in North America. While the term Canadiano has been used since at least 2007, more recently it has gained popularity. As a result of the trade tensions between Canada and the US, Kicking Horse Coffee, a coffee brand based in Invermere, BC (see Image 1), encouraged Canadian coffee roasters and cafés to permanently rename the classic Americano Canadiano (see 2025 quotation).
As Chart 1 shows, the term is dominant in Canada (see the fist note on the methodology). The term appears to be a Type 4 Canadianism — Culturally Significant — and displays significant frequency in Canada.

Chart 1 is based on Canadiano coffee in order to avoid noise in the international domains such as a hotel chain, a newspaper and a coffee brand by the name of Canadiano. The form is also in use in other languages in related meanings, e.g. in Portuguese in the combination of Luso-Canadiano, i.e. Portuguese-speaking Canadians.

The Bench Artisan Food Market (368 Vancouver Ave.) is owned by Dawn Halladay and showcases handcrafted foods from her well-stocked catering pantry, delicatessen and espresso bar. We enjoyed perfectly constructed espressos and Canadianos (a more patriotic Americano) from Backyard Beans Organic coffee after lunching on toasted grilled- vegetable-and-Cuban-pulled-pork paninis.

There are a few cool new developments at Cedar Tree Cafe, including daily "lunch box" specials and a student day special on Wednesdays. [...] On Wednesdays, they are also offering a discount for students with student ID. It gets you a Canadiano, any size, for $2.50 and 10 per cent off any food menu item (excluding baked goods and specials).

The coffee is not out of this world, but also has nothing bad to say for it. It is well prepared and, like Salt Spring, is called the “Canadiano.” It has a nice bold and subtle flavour. Not acrid in the least, which was a nice change over my last review. This was my first espresso-based coffee at Viva - I had always just gone for the drip. The drip is also very good.
1bn. — Food & Drink
an espresso shot of coffee diluted with hot water and an added substance.
Type: 1. Origin — Additions may be maple syrup (see the 2008 quotation) or, Vienna-style mélange, frothed milk (see the 2018 quotation).
