In the early postwar years de Havilland was faced with a cutback. But by this time design and development had advanced to the stage where the company was ready with its own airplane--the DHC-1 Chipmunk. This was the first all-Canadian designed and built aircraft. It underwent flight tests in May, 1946. It found immediate favor with the air forces of the world.
