PMO
DCHP-2 (Jul 2016)
n. — abbreviation, Politics
the Prime Minister's Office.
Type: 5. Frequency — PMO is overwhelmingly most prevalent in Canada (see Chart 1). The term does not appear to be a preservation from the British parliamentary tradition and therefore appears to be Canadian in origin. Although PMO is often used in the news media, and by individuals connected to the Prime Minister's Office (see the 1969 quotation), it rarely occurs in the everyday speech of those who do not take a profound interested in domestic politics.

Look for another series of extensively contrived headline-grabbing events involving Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau this fall similar to the publicity strategy last spring designed as a build-up to the general election that didn't happen.
The planning is already under way in the PMO. The Privy Council office would seem to favor a later rather than earlier election and bears the unmistakable imprint of Mr. Trudeau's principal secretary, Jim Coutts, and his comrade-in-arms Senator Keith Davey.
1985
External Affairs Minister Joe Clark said that as far as he knows, Coates decided on his own to resign.
However, a source close to the PMO said that Mulroney rebuffed a first offer from Coates to resign after assuring himself there had been no security breach.

Heafey is wrong if she believes that, because his mandate is limited to investigating RCMP conduct, Hughes will refrain from pointing his finger at the PMO if that's where the evidence leads.
She may be a political appointee trying to navigate choppy waters as agitated Liberal politicians try to distance themselves from the mess, but Hughes has no such problem.

However, they did reveal that: -- The names of any other Canadians present for Harper's meeting with Obama would be confidential. The PMO didn't budge when told that the White House had disclosed that some Canadian cabinet ministers would be present, in addition to providing a detailed list of U.S. officials who would be in the room. "We're not releasing the names of officials," Teneycke said. -- No TV cameras, audio equipment, or reporters will be permitted in the airport lounge where the president will meet with Jean for 15 minutes.

Every prime minister since Trudeau has basically taken this approach to the exercise of power; so much so that today most every important decision is vetted at the executive level of the PMO. As political scientist Donald Savoie observes, in the past 40 years or so "the shift from cabinet government to government from the centre" has been completed. Nowadays, the prime minister and his court dominate the entire political process, effectively or otherwise.
