DCHP-3

UIC

DCHP-2 (Oct 2016)
n. abbreviation, Administration

the abbreviation for Unemployment Insurance Commission.

Type: 1. Origin Although the term unemployment insurance is used in other locations, such as the United States, the abbreviation for Unemployment Insurance Commission appears to have originated in Canada, and UIC is overwhelmingly predominant in Canada (see Chart 1). In 1996, the Unemployment Insurance program was renamed the Employment Insurance program, and thereafter the older terms, including UI and UIC, fell into relative disuse.
See also COD-2, s.v. "UIC", which is marked "Cdn".
