Brasse is a French linear measure, equivalent to 5318 English feet. . . . There is evidence . . . that in the middle of the eighteenth century a "brasse" was used for a shorter measure, about the length of a forearm. The tobacco was braided or twisted into long strands, and then measured by the brasse.
