brown

DCHP-3 (Apr 2025)
adj. Food & Drink

made with part of the whole grain (usually wheat, sometimes mixed with rye).

Type: 5. Frequency Breads and pastas are made from grain that is called brown in Canada and usually whole wheat in the US. Other than the Boston type of brown bread that is sweetened with molasses, Canadian brown bread is not sweet and often offered as a choice between white, brown or sourdough. The term is Canadian by virtue of frequency (see Chart 1 under brown bread, where the difference between Canada and the US is a factor or 10).
