a mixture of berries, sometimes containing apples and rhubarb, generally used as a pie filling.

Type: 1. Origin Bumbleberry is used most frequently in Canada (see Chart 1), most often in British Columbia and Alberta (see Chart 2). It is not listed in any non-Canadian dictionaries from the standard set. COD-2 writes that the word may come from "English dialect bumble, = rosehip, blackberry, possibly deformation of BRAMBLE". The name is used by some as a marker of national identity (see the 1992 quotation).

The pies are probably the stars of the show at the restaurant: fruit pies such as apple, blackberry, bumbleberry (a mixture of raspberry, apple, blackberry and rhubarb) and cream pies such as lemon meringue and walnut cream, are in big demand, says McKay.

Fruit pies are a specialty. We chose Marie Quinn's "bumbleberry" flavor - a mixture of the fruits she makes into other pies - blueberry, strawberry with rhubarb, or raspberry, $4.75, or apple, $4. The "bumbles" were delicious, the pastry good.

"The blueberry ice cream isn't written in stone. It could be raspberry, banana, cherry, saskatoon, bumbleberry or chocolate. Basically any flavour on the board," he said.

They also make four table wines (less sweet than the fortifieds): cherry, bumbleberry (a combination of berries), strawberry-rhubarb and raspberry.

The soft, fluid palate carries the same perfumed black fruits and bumbleberry fruits spiced with fresh black pepper spice.
