n. — Education
a grant to support a student's education, awarded primarily on the basis of financial need, as distinguished from a scholarship, awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement.
Type: 2. Preservation — OED-3 states that bursary originated in Scotland, and this fact is supported by early Canadian quotations which reference Scottish cities (see the 1885 and 1898 quotations, for example). This term is also found in many Commonwealth countries, but is infrequent in the US (see Chart 1).

1935
At first each bursary was of the value of $250 a year for four-years; later it was increased to $300 a year.
1959
The Londoner, Freda Burgoyne, is a program worker in Great Britain, and is here for six months on a King George VI bursary to observe work in Canadian YWCA's.
1977
Mrs. Dobell said the federal Government was more interested in implementing bursary programs and special projects for second-language instruction which would exist quite separately from traditional methods of financing.

Vancouver Island University says it will benefit from a $500,000 donation from The Joyce Foundation.
The money will aid the Youth in Care Tuition Waiver program and will go toward bursaries for ongoing support of VIU students in the Youth in Care Tuition Waiver program who are over the age of 24, according to a press release.
