DCHP-3

dangle

DCHP-2 (Mar 2016)
v. Hockey; usually to dangle through

to skillfully maneuver through the opposition.

Type: 4. Culturally Significant The term dangle describes the act of maneuvering through the opposition (see the 2001 quotation) while keeping possession of the puck (see the 2014 quotation). Thus, the term is often used in the phrase "dangling through", as players dangle through defensive players (see the 2005 and 2008 quotations) as a result of excellent stickhandling. The significance of the sport of hockey in Canada's social and historical development warrants the classification of hockey terms as culturally significant (see CBC reference).

Quotations

1999
"He's more of a goal scorer than a passer. If I have to (carry it), then I have to at times. But I like the fact Dougie carries the puck. It's better for everyone." Weight dangled through Saturday's practice at West Edmonton Mall and felt fine afterwards.
2001
"We had a three-on-three attack and guys were trying to stickhandle and dangle through three guys when they didn't have any speed. We turned the puck over and spent the next 35 seconds trying to get it back and we never did."
2002
The team's speed up front, he said, has allowed players to "dangle" through the neutral zone and hit the opposing blue line in top gear. If Sprague had his way though -- strictly from a coaching perspective -- he'd put the red line back in play.
2005
The Shattucks St. Mary's grad has the ability to dangle through two lines of defenders and a ton of patience.
2007
Ex-Cougars defenceman Ryan Gillen scored a rare goal on Sunday -- "I don't get many, it's the second of my career," he said -- and it was made sweeter because it came at CN Centre against a team that dealt him away. How did he plan to describe the goal to his family? "I got the puck behind the net, dangled through the whole team, and some guys were off-side so I dangled back and had to go through them all one more time -- that's three times, so I went around something like 15 players."
2011
"I'm not going to be able to dangle through the U.S. national team and nobody can," she said. "You've got to just make smart plays and dump it in and get it in deep. You can't do anything fancy. You might have a little more time at the prep-school level to make that extra move or go around the D rather than just chipping it by them."
2014
"I have to improve my possession (skills)," said Gazdic. "I'm not going to dangle through two or three guys, but I have to have more confidence with the puck. I have to get to where I can be out there any time of the game, on offensive or defensive zone faceoffs. I have to win Dallas's (coach Eakins) trust."
