a firm cheese made from cow's milk.
Type: 1. Origin — This variety of cheese was created in Canada to resemble the Italian Montasio cheese. The Montasio name can only be used for cheese made in Italy, so the Canadian version is named after the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia where Montasio cheese is made. The cheese has a light-brown rind and is known for its nutty flavour. The name occurs most frequently in Canada (see Chart 1).

There are a lot of winners at La Bottega's lunch counter. Behind the Byward Market grocery store's staggering offering of deli meats, cheeses, olive oils and other foodie staples, the kind ladies in the kitchen will happily serve you fine lunch-sized pizzas or a tasty Italian club sandwich of chicken breast, pancetta, pesto and melted friulano cheese. But La Bottega's most popular dish is the Calabria Mia sandwich.
2005
Production of Harrowsmith's award-winning brands of cheddar came to a halt when Saputo acquired the plant. The factory has become a manufacturer of Italian specialty cheeses: friulano, parmesan, feta, havarti and asiago.
2009
In 1987, Mr. Galati became 100% owner of what is now known as the Galati Cheese Company Ltd. Galati Cheese is the only cheese manufacturer in southwestern Ontario. They produce a variety of fresh artisan cheeses, including ricotta, bocconcini, mozzarella, friulano and many more.
