the level in elementary and high school marking to a year's academic work.
Type: 1. Origin — Canadians call the years of school grade one, grade two, grade three rather than, as in the US, first grade, second grade, third grade or the British first form, second form, third form. The difference between grade one and first grade is the most profound lexical difference in one study of Canada and US terms (Boberg 2005: 46), with 87 percent of Canadians reporting the former, but 98 percent of Americans reporting the latter.

The story about commissionaire Wayne Grant in The Daily Gleaner on Nov. 9 revealed some interesting information about French immersion where one in 10 students in the last grade made it far enough in immersion to take the oral French proficiency test resulting in 632 out of 6,233 anglophone students in Grade 12 and most of those students did not meet the province's goal of speaking French at a high enough level. Educators should be alarmed.
