DCHP-3

invigilate

DCHP-2 (Jan 2013)
v. Education

to watch over or supervise students at an examination.

Type: 2. Preservation Invigilate is a preservation from British English, where it underwent semantic narrowing from meaning 'to watch carefully' to the present meaning of supervising an exam (see OED-3, s.v. "invigilator"). The term has been preserved in Canada, but according to internet searches in Chart 1, it has not been preserved to the same degree in other former British colonies. The term does not appear in AND, DNZE or DSAE. In W-3, it is marked "British"; we here add the Canadian dimension.
See also COD-2, s.v. "invigilate", which is marked "Cdn & Brit.".

Quotations

1932
Under the heading "Conditions Contributory to Good Invigilation," and devoid of all excess verbiage is found this interesting treatise on the essentials of good invigilation. "The function of an invigilator is to invigilate. For the proper fulfulment of this function certain condtitions are necessary; and for the proper guidance of the invigilator these conditions may be enumerated as follows:
1965
Thus the hours presently spent by members of the English department in committee, invigilating and marking, all for the great god Exam, could be channelled into teaching.
1989
When three students from the Northwest Territories petitioned the university to write their exams closer to home, a special senate committee approved the first frontier examination centre in 1892. Grant, who pushed Queen's to stake its claim in the development of Western Canada, urged the committee to approve requests from far-flung students. It was impractical to send professors such distances, so local school inspectors or clergy were asked to supervise. The practice of calling on priests and ministers to invigilate continues today, Shirley Simpson says, because they are considered "trustworthy."
1994
Blondin was a member of the board of directors from 1985 to 1991, as treasurer, vice-chair and a member of the public relations and member services committees. He served as chapter chair in 1986 and 1987 and continues to invigilate exams and participate in chapter activities.
2002
There has already been considerable interest in the program from other B.C. fire departments, who by using the NVDFR curriculum would be able to run their own training components and then have a NVDFR instructor sent to invigilate exams.
2012
"Not just for the people who attended here, there are a lot of other things we did for people. We've had people come in who were taking courses from another college such as Dartmouth University in Nova Scotia and they needed somebody to invigilate their exams, we were in touch with the University, they sent the exams and we invigilated them. We've done that with NAIT, SAIT, Medicine Hat College and Norquest. So it wasn't just Northern Lakes students."
