Type: 3. Semantic Change In other locations, pathfinder denotes an explorer or trailblazer, while in the Canadian context it may also refer to a member of the Girl Guides of Canada. Although other Guiding and Scouting organizations exist in various countries, the term pathfinder is most prevalent in Canada (see Chart 1). The rough equivalent in the US Girl Scouts would be the age level Cadettes (ages 11-14). The pathfinder branch of the Girl Guides was initiated in 1979 and originally incorporated girls aged 12 to 15 (see the 1979 quotation).

As the needs of young women change, so the Girl Guide organization changes to try to meet them. Pathfinders, a new branch of Guiding, to start in September, will be for girls aged 12 to 15. Pip Rogers, chairman of the national implementation committee of the Girl Guides of Canada, says the program has been designed to bridge the transition from Guides to Rangers.

Girl Guides of Canada is adding another branch to its family tree of brownies, guides, pathfinders, rangers and cadets. Five-year-old girls in the new group, to be known as sparks, will wear bright pink T-shirts emblazoned with their motto: I promise to share and be a friend.

The silver medal also asks the person to explore an area not done before. Skala took up art, and ended up with an exhibition. The Duke of Edinburgh awards seemed a natural extension after achieving her Canada cord in Girl Guides and Pathfinders. "I still wanted something to challenge myself," Skala said.
2008
- On Saturday, hundreds of Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders will lend a helping hand to Edmonton's Food Bank by going door to door collecting food during the 12th annual Hike for Plenty. This year the Girl Guides will also be collecting used cellphones as part of the Phones for Food program. The Hike for Plenty is the first major food drive of the year for Edmonton's Food Bank, and over the past 11 years has raised more than 85,000 kilograms of food.
2016
For girls ages 12 to 14 Pathfinders meet once a week, usually for two hours The Pathfinder program allows girls to take the lead and become active in the causes they believe in. In Pathfinders, girls will start to develop their independence while also learning the value of teamwork. Girls have the chance to organize their own events and outings and are encouraged to explore new interests in diverse areas such as photography and web design, fashion and interior design, engineering, community safety, technology and more.
