The most common boat on the rivers of the North is the poling boat which penetrates where the larger vessels could not go. Typically the poling boat is from ten to twenty feet long, from three to five feet wide on top, and has a narrow bottom eighteen to thirty inches wide. It has a nose shaped something like a shovel which is raised high above the water so that it does not bury in the current.
