Quotations

1937
[Quintering means] killing scattered seals while the ship is moving through loose ice, the men going over the side for the purpose.
1966
"Quintering" is still believed to be carried out in Cabot Strait between Cape Breton Island and Newfoundland. In this type of hunting a ship moves through the loose floating ice and the younger and more agile members of the crew line up at the bow. When they see a seal they hop from the deck on to the ice, club the seal and hook it through the jaw. It is then hauled back to the ship on a line.
