Oak was sometimes cut "waney"; birch usually. . . . When "waney" was used as an adjective to describe timber other than pine, the kind of wood was always named--waney oak, waney ash.

At a later date "waney" timber was made by the same method, only in this operation the edges of the log were left rounded instead of squared off. In this way, the good outside boards, that were previously wasted, were sliced off at the mill into narrower pieces than the actual square would have involved.
