The light at the top was the mycelium of the fungus which, it is well known, develops on the decaying wood of the spruce and some other kinds of trees under certain climatic conditions, and shines at night with a pale, soft phosphorescence. It is frequently called by the country people "fox-fire," and sometimes "wolf-fire."
