Toontown

DCHP-3 (Apr 2023)
n. Prairies, Informal

a nickname for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Type: 1. Origin Playing on the last syllable of the city's name, the nickname of Toontown for Saskatoon seems to be used primarily by residents in the Prairie provinces (see Chart 1 and the 2005 quotation), especially those of Saskatchewan itself (see the 2000, the 2012, the 2015 and the 2019 quotations).

The high frequency with which the term appears in Ontario domain names (see Chart 1) has to do with the fact that English-language Canadian media are disproportionately headquartered in Ontario.

Quotations

2000
Long story short, or in this case, short story long, there's no way that Our Lady Peace fans from Regina should have to make that awful drive to Toontown and back for the band's gig there on Feb. 10 at Saskatchewan Place.
2005
The trip from Edmonton to Regina was okay I'd have to say, with the Bear taking me to Lloydminster and the Goat getting me into Saskatchewan. When I hit Battleford, they had a station that played a Bon Jovi song, which was nice, but there was nothing once I got to Saskatoon. I was listening to static from the Regina stations driving through Saskatoon to avoid listening to bad music. To combat the lack of good tunes in Toontown, I went out and bought Michael Jackson's Thriller. I suggest you do the same if you're in that neck of the woods.
2012
There are 19 of them in the Brier this year, and seven more playing in their second. But it's about those four playoff spots in this Howard versus Koe 'Toontown Showdown. "Uh, I guess we're one of the teams fighting for third spot," said Brad Gushue, who comes here with a name but not necessarily a game.
2015
The pair, who had never heard of barbecue competitions before then, decided to load up their backyard gas barbecue and head to Saskatoon for the Toontown Smokedown Saskatchewan BBQ Championships. But after setting up the grill and tossing on their signature Greek-flavoured ribs, Phillip and Haan started to get thirsty.
2019
TOONTOWN TIME? Saskatoon nearly adopted its own time in a 1923 referendum, although Dahl says it's not entirely clear what that would have meant. A proposal to adopt "Saskatoon time" - which was supposed to be distinct from Mountain Standard Time - failed by just 38 votes, 2,003 to 1,965. That marked the second vote on Saskatoon time, following a referendum two years earlier.
