Origin The term is likely the result of a sizeable Eastern European and Ukrainian immigrant population in Greater Edmonton, which served as inspiration for a blend of the familiar suffix -chuck in Eastern European family names with the name of the city. The term's undertones oscillate between endearment and antipathy, depending on the user.
This name should not be used by outsiders, so as not to risk offending Edmontonians.

My previous knowledge of Alberta was limited. I had done the wow-thing while touring the giant Ukrainian Easter egg in Vegreville, drooled over Medicine Hat country singer babe Terri Clark, and tipped a few pints at the Calgary Stampede and Klondike Days in Edmonchuck. And, for the record, worshipped monosyllabic Mike, the Royal Canadian Air Farce character played by John Morgan who keeps Canmore in the limelight ahead of other unknown Prairie places.

Seeing as I got ahead of myself by about five or six weeks and since I have started writing this before the middle of December I thought it best to summarize things that have happened and were not in any newspaper or on the TV news. I have enjoyed informative and entertaining conversations with a couple of very wise ladies that come from around here and a couple of older folks of the same gender in Edmonchuck.
