DCHP-2 (Sep 2012)
n. — Games
a bet that selects the first and second horses to finish in a race.
Type: 1. Origin — The national institution supervising horse betting defines exactor as 'a type of bet on a race to select, in the correct order, the first two horses in the official result' (see Justice Laws Canada reference). An exactor bet is one of many choices, alongside other types of bets such as win, place, show or triactor (see the 2005 quotation). Exactor is listed as a variant of the North American term exacta (see AHD-5 and OED-3, s.v. exacta) and the US term "exacta" (see COD-2, s.v. "exacta"). See also COD-2, s.v. "exactor", which is marked as "Cdn".

Beginners should have no trouble with straight win, place and show bets. Not only are they easier to make, but you'll cash a winning ticket much more often than betting exotics. Bets such as exactors, triactors and Pick-3s are better left until you've gained experience.
2002
The exactor is the first of the exotic bets. An exactor combines the horses that finish first and second, in exact order, on one ticket. If you select horse No. 3 to finish first and horse number six to finish second, you would ask for a $2 exactor-3-6.
2010
The exactor (picking the first- and second-place horses) in the third race paid $639 on a $2 wager.
2012
What would an exactor of Vinokourov and Rigoberto Uran pay at the track? Handsomely, for sure. Vinokourov, an established pro from Kazakhstan but hardly a pre-race favourite, stunned a massive British crowd with his golden finish ahead of Colombia's Uran, after the pair slipped away from a strong lead group of about 32 riders late in the 250-kilometre race.
