E-Town
DCHP-3 (Apr 2023)
Spelling variants:E-town, E Town
n. — Prairies, especially Alberta, informal
a nickname for Edmonton, Alberta.
Type: 1. Origin — E-Town is a more recent coinage than Edmonchuck, without the latter's negative connotations. Much like the Toontown nickname for Saskatoon, the nickname E-Town for Edmonton is used primarily by residents of the Prairie provinces (see the 2022 quotation), especially those of Alberta itself (see the 1993, the 1993, the 2006 and the 2018 quotations).
The rhyme between E-Town for Edmonton and C-Town for Calgary, Alberta's two largest and often competing cities, is likely another reason the nickname has gained favour.
