Type: 3. Semantic Change — The nickname Haligonia to refer to the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, has its origins in West Yorkshire, England, where the residents of its town of Halifax are referred to as Haligonians. However, as Chart 1 indicates, contemporary Canadians are much more likely than modern Brits to use the term Haligonia, especially those living in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (see Chart 2), to refer to their own actual city of Halifax.
